about

Like the "High and Low / The Message" release from 2020, "Bluebells" was recorded in the late 1990s in New Orleans at Magazine Sound Recording, just before Patrick Sansone joined John Stirratt to form The Autumn Defense, and several years before he joined Wilco. The track features Greg Wieczorek of The Autumn Defense on drums, and Sansone on vocals and all other instruments. The song has remained unreleased until now.

The song was written in collaboration with songwriter Bill DeMain, who wrote the lyrics, while Sansone composed and performed the music. In the 1990s Sansone became a fan of the sophisticated-pop duo Swan Dive based in Nashville, led by singer and composer DeMain and singer Molly Felder (who later sang a guest vocal on a track on the debut album by The Autumn Defense.) Sansone recalls,

"I was (and still am) a big fan of Bill's songwriting, and I approached him with the idea of writing together. Bill sent me the lyrics to "Bluebells" via snail mail from Nashville to New Orleans, and I remember being immediately inspired...one of those rare moments in songwriting when the composition comes quickly and from somewhere almost beyond consciousness. A moment of magic."

Bill DeMain reflects on his inspiration for the lyric:

The lyric of “Bluebells” was partly inspired by Rappaccini’s Daughter, a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, which is about a beautiful young woman who tends a secret garden of exotic plants and flowers, and essentially becomes one with them. There’s a great line about “whether it were a girl tending her favorite flower, or one sister performing the duties of affection to another.” While the story has gothic, tragic overtones, I wanted the lyric to be lighter and more loving (the choice of flower also has a connection to Paul McCartney’s last words to his late wife Linda). When I showed it to Patrick, I had a feeling he would respond to it, and I was right. His melody and beautiful vocal harmony perfectly captures the pastoral feeling in the words.
